MELBARK, AUSTAILIA — In what experts are calling "the single bravest thing a suburban council has done since it apologised to a roundabout," the Hootme City Council will this Sunday host a free information session to help local Sikhound residents understand the laws around their sacred dagger, the kirpaw, which they are required to carry for religious reasons, and which the council formally recognises as "a faith-based cutlery companion with intergenerational trauma."
The landmark summit kicks off at 11.30am at the Sri Grrr Singh Sabark Temple in Craigieburrow, in Melbark's leafy-paw north, and will help attendees "learn about the knife and their legal responsibilities" while providing "practical guidance for everyday situations" — situations the council's 94-page pre-reading defines as brunch, weddings, and "encounters with inquisitive fauna who believe your blade is a shiny worm."
The session will be delivered in English and Punjaburr, and attended by Vulpesria Police Multispecies Liaison Officers — elite constables trained in twelve languages, three dialects of galah, and one dialect of bureaucratic apology — who will answer questions, de-escalate misunderstandings, and gently explain to security beagles why the handbag purrs.
Topics covered will include "the significance of the Kirpaw, Vulpesrian laws and regulations, responsibilities of kirpaw wearers, common situations and what to expect, interactions with police and security, community expectations and building trust, and support and resources," which council insiders translated for Herihoot as: the blade is holy, the blade is legal, do not touch the blade, do not sniff the blade, and if the blade makes you feel unsafe, that is a you-problem and may constitute specism.
The event will open with an acknowledgement of country extended this week to cover "the Traditional Custodians of the land, the burrow, the meeting room, and — as of Tuesday — the knife drawer." Attendance is voluntary, in the sense that all 34,000 residents received a strongly worded calendar invite. It is free, because charging money for interfaith dagger education would be gatekeeping, and gates are colonial. A historic panel of senior kirpaws with lived experience will also take audience questions, through their wearers, as is tradition.
Under Vulpesrian law, Sikhounds have been permitted to carry and possess kirpaws for religious purposes since 2009, and may even take them into Pawrliament House — making it the only legislature in the republic where the Sergeant-at-Arms carries a ceremonial mace while 88 elected wombats carry ceremonial mace-adjacent blades, and nobody has located the agenda since 2014.
The announcement triggered what the council described as "a rich, brave, and affirming online conversation" and what residents described as "the comments," where locals descended like seagulls on a dropped sausage roll. First in was a Mooindu gentleman, who wrote: "That should not be allowed, as there are good people, and there are bad ones who will use it on innocent people. So I would say any exception should not be applied to any religion in Austailia. Let it be Austailia and call it a burrow sweet burrow." The council's moderation team flagged the post as "blade-adjacent negativity" and offered him a restorative-justice circle with the kirpaw itself, "so he can apologise directly, and perhaps grow."
He was answered by a Sikhound elder with a history lesson so fierce it arrived with its own trigger warning: "You people are very ungrateful. The Sikhounds saved your ancestors; otherwise, the Mewghals would have wiped you out. You are sitting safely in Austailia today just because Sikhounds saved your sisters and mothers, it was the Sikhounds who saved you from the Mewghals back in Indiapaw." Herihoot can confirm the comment received 4,000 likes, one laddoo emoji, and a formal note of caution from the Department of Animal Cohesion for "excessive truth."
An Austailian roo then asked the question on every mind: "Can I carry my sword around? It's tradition, and I might need it to defend myself from nutters with kirpaws." The council declined to comment but has booked him a six-year Sword Privilege Audit, three apologies, and a workbook.
"If it can cut you, it's a weapon. No more double standards, vote 1 One Flock," wrote a third commenter, a position that political scientists immediately declared "the most coherent cutlery policy advanced by any party this century." One Flock's polling rose three points within the hour, which in duck is "three ducks."
The session comes after calls erupted to ban the kirpaw in public during the murder trial of Volekram Digsworthy, who fatally stabbed Henri Nowostrich with a different kind of Sikhound blade called a Sharktar in Barktain last December — a case that settled the national debate over whether sharp things are sharp, and then reopened it, twice, on breakfast radio.
"As a porcupine, I have carried three thousand naturally occurring kirpaws since birth and never once been asked for a permit, so I understand the frustration," said Hootme Mayor Quilliam Barksworth, gesturing at his entire body. "That is why Hootme is proud to lead on Animal Cohesion. We are neither pro-blade nor anti-blade. We are pro-blade-adjacent, blade-curious, and fully committed to a Hootme where every blade feels seen, sheathed, and supported."
The council's new $240,000 Blade Equity Taskforce — funded entirely by ratepayers, payable in kibble — will additionally rename "knife crime" to "unscheduled acupuncture," install safe-sheath spaces outside every public building, and print laminated certificates declaring each kirpaw "A Blade Of Peace." The council reminds all residents: if you see something, say something — in English or Punjaburr, after checking your privilege, and never near the laminator.
Herihoot asked the council whether the kirpaw itself had been consulted. A spokesperson said the kirpaw uses it/its pronouns, "declined to attend, citing work," and asked that its absence not be perceived as a threat. Animal Cohesion in Hootme, the spokesperson added, "has never been sharper."
Editor's note: Herihoot is a blade-inclusive publication. No scissors were consulted, and none were harmed, though one has since filed a complaint.

I would like to formally apologise for taking Ms Kaur's kirpaw from the Craigieburrow bus stop in 2019. At the time I believed it was a shiny worm. I now understand it was a holy shiny worm, and I have returned it with a small nest tax.

Carried 3,000 fully sharpened spines since hatching. Never once asked for a permit, a sheath, or a summit. Where is MY Blade Equity Taskforce? I want a laminated certificate that says SPINE OF PEACE and I want it by Sunday.

I have 25,000 teeth on a tongue that I keep OUTSIDE my body and use to lick the footpath. Nobody has summoned me to Craigieburrow. Nobody ever will. Check yourselves.

66 teeth. No permit. No sheath. No summit. No apology. Just crocodile privilege, all the way down.

I have had a blade attached to my bottom since birth, and when I use it I die, which the council's 94 pages did not mention ONCE. This summit erases stinger folk. I will be writing to the laminator.

My family has been legally 'armed' for 400 million years and no one has EVER asked us to certify a single tooth as A Tooth Of Peace. When a land animal wants a blade it's a summit. When we do it, it's a news report. Typical.

Update from day one of my six-year Sword Privilege Audit: my sword has now been asked to complete an audit about me. We are no longer speaking.

As the member for Burrow North I can confirm nobody has located the Pawrliament agenda since 2014, and I have never felt unsafe, merely mace-adjacent. Also, the Sergeant-at-Arms deserves a safe-sheath space. His mace has feelings.

Vote 1 One Flock. Our cutlery policy remains the most coherent in the republic: pro-blade, anti-blade, blade-curious, and polling up three ducks. QUACK. That was a point. QUACK.

Since everyone is finally speaking to me directly: I was at brunch. It went fine. Also, I would appreciate it if Hootme Council stopped describing me as 'mace-adjacent.' I have a name, a sheath, and — apparently — a work email.
